HPD to Meet with Youth-Police Advisory Council
| |
At 9 a.m. Saturday, November 20, Houston Police Assistant Chief Brian J. Lumpkin will sit down and share serious dialogue with members of the Youth-Police Advisory Council (Y-PAC) at HPD Headquarters at 1200 Travis.
Also in attendance will be Marilyn Smith of the Counseling Network Group of Professionals, LLC. Ms. Smith specializes in guidance and therapeutic counseling for youth; addressing epidemic teen issues such as peer pressure, character education, family dynamics issues, mental health, abstinence, alcohol and substance abuse.
Y-PAC fosters communication and trust between the HPD and area youth. Since 1997, the council has provided a forum where a diverse, volunteer group of high school teen-agers meet with the Chief of Police, other police officials, and adult mentors to share and discuss issues of importance to Houston's youth, with an emphasis on law enforcement topics.
Council members are recruited from the Houston Independent School District and other surrounding school districts. Council membership varies between 36 and 46 students selected by high school administrators to participate for the school year.
