New Constitution and By-laws for Union
Posted by Ray Hunt on Wednesday March 30, 2011

Voting Begins On New Constitution and By-Laws for Union

 Voting on an entirely new version of the Houston Police Officers' Union Constitution and By-Laws begins today. All voting will be done via the Union's E-Vote system (online) and will continue until April 20, 2011.

Highlights of the significant changes are as follows;

  • Additional board position designated for a police officer in patrol with 10 years or less experience at the time of election
  • The appointment of the immediate past Union president to the board in a non-voting capacity for a six-month term to facilitate the entry of a new president
  • Addition of a State and National Affiliation Committee to the HPOU committee structure. The committee would monitor the Union's organizational affiliations with state and national groups
  • Removal of the July general membership meeting from the Union's routine general meeting schedule. There has not been a July meeting for more than 10 years due to summer vacation schedules
  • Candidates for available board positions will be able to sign up until 10 a.m. on the morning of the October general membership meeting. Previously, the sign-up ended seven days before the October meeting

Voting through the "E-vote" process will take place in conjunction with the April 7 general membership meeting devoted to answering any questions from the membership. The entire document is available for review on the site prior to voting.

You may vote by going to www.hpou.org and clicking on the VOTE button at the top right corner of the page. This will open a login page. Enter Username as your payroll number (no leading 0) and the Password is a combination of your date of birth and last four digits of social security number. Example (021419681805)
