The HPOU has received many calls regarding news reports and management reports of possible layoffs. The numbers discussed include classified layoffs. While we agree the City is in dire financial shape, we do not believe there will be any layoffs of classified officers. We currently have a cadet class attending the academy and believe the May class will also start as scheduled.
We have made the Mayor aware of the consequences of laying off jailers, which in effect will be a cut in officers responding to calls for service and investigating crimes. The HPOU maintains that we are 1000-2000 officers short in the City of Houston and there is no room for any classified cuts.
If our information changes, we will advise via another eblast.
