September 11th, in memory of Travis Manion's
Supporting Our Military Heroes
911 Heroes Run
The genesis for the 911 Heroes Run is as follows. USMC 1st Lt. Travis Manion was a young United States Marine and a Annapolis graduate. He deployed to Iraq on December 26, 2006, for his second tour as part of a Military Transition Team. During his final patrol mission on Sunday, April 29, 2007, Travis was killed by enemy sniper fire while fighting courageously to defend against an enemy ambush. Each year on September 11th, in memory of Travis Manion's sacrifice, the Travis Manion Foundation brings local communities together for a 9/11 Heroes Run to remember, honor and support our men and women in the Armed Services, Police, Firefighter and First Responder communities who protect and serve our country every day. In 2010, more than 10,000 runners and supporters in six different cities laced up running shoes to remember the sacrifices of so many. This year the Foundation's goal is to dramatically increase run locations on the 10th Anniversary of the attacks of 9/11. On September 11, 2011, Houston will serve as a run location for a 5K 9/11 Heroes Run to be held at Ellington Airport. The 9/11 Heroes Run is held to ensure that no one forgets the sacrifices of so many that day and in the decade since. The proceeds from this event will go to assist wounded veterans and the families of Fallen Heroes and veterans. Come join other runners and volunteers as we honor our Heroes. Our goal is to never forget the sacrifices of all of the Heroes of September 11th - veteran, first responder, civilian. Volunteer, run, or just come out and watch - it promises to be a great time. For more information, or to register for the event, please go to 911heroesrun.com. If you are interested in volunteering your time for this cause, please contact Captain Greg Fremin at 281-230-6868 or Sergeant Marsha Todd at 713-417-9777. The race will be held at Ellington Airport (11602 Aerospace Dr.) at 9am. We will have pre-race activities at 8:30, which will commence with a ceremonial dedication by HPD and HFD along with a joint military/law enforcement/first responder honor guards. We will also have the Patriot Guard Riders involved. Since GM and Chevy are the National Sponsors for the Travis Manion Foundation and the 911 Heroes Run, Lone Star Chevy and Ron Craft Baytown Chevy have already pledged 25k to the event. Lukes Locker will host our packet pickup and registration along with providing their services. As stated, this will be an officially sanctioned event for the City of Houston for 911 and the Mayor and other city officials with be at this event along with a host of other elected officials. Clear Channel Communication has also indicated that they are going to provide their advertisement services for promoting this event along with the Houston Police Officers' Union and the Houston Airport System. I anticipate many more entities/sponsors coming on board along with multiple law enforcement/fire/military branches and private running groups. As always, your support and assistance is greatly appreciated along with passing the information to your fellow colleagues. Gregory J.
