Houston Police Officers Union January 5, Membership Meeting
MINUTES OF THE JANUARY 5, 2012 MEMBERSHIP MEETING FOR THE
HOUSTON POLICE OFFICERS' UNION
OPENING
Pledge of Allegiance and Prayer
BUSINESS
Ray Hunt called the meeting to order. Ray Hunt introduced several dignitaries attending the meeting including: HR Director-Omar Reid, Council Members Andrew Burks, Larry Green, Helena Brown, Jerry Davis, Ellen Cohen, Mike Sullivan and Steven Daniels from Public Affairs. Jack Christie and Mike Laster were not able to make the meeting.
COP Charles McClelland and Mayor Anise Parker were also in attendance.
Captain Greg Fremin, Captain Brian Bennett and Sergeant Marsha Todd made a presentation to the COP for his support of the 9/11 Heroes Run. The Houston race raised approximately $70,000 and had the most participants for the 35 cities. COP McClelland addressed Union members and thanked everyone for their work in reducing the Houston murder rate. For 2011, Houston had only 198 murders which is the lowest rate since 1965.
The meeting was dedicated to Officer Louis L Sander who was killed in the line of duty on January 21, 1967.
Mayor Anise Parker then swore in all new Union Board members. The Mayor also addressed the members and thanked all officers for their hard work in bringing down the crime rate. The Mayor also thanked the Union board for their work in agreeing to a contract and working with the City in tough economic times.
AWARDS
Officer Mary Machac from the North Patrol Division was awarded the FTO of the Month award for November 2011.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Ray Hunt advised that Joe Pyland will be the chair of PAC. Ray Hunt also asked for all members support in joining PAC.
Ray Hunt announced that one $100 gift card will be given away each month for those officers that join or have increased their contribution to PAC. This month's gift card was awarded to Officer Clarence Cresswell.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
The forensic audit was completed and the union has five copies of the complete audit available to members for review. The copies will be kept in the Union offices and are available for review Monday - Friday, 0800 - 1700 hours. The introduction letter of the audit findings has been copied and was available for all members at the Union meeting
NEW BUSINESS
Ray Hunt announced that Sergeant Jason Leal has taken a turn for the worse and is currently at MD Anderson hospital. There is a blood drive today for him being held at the S. Gessner station until 2:00 pm.
Ray Hunt advised the members that there will be several meetings available for officers to fulfill the coaching requirements for CIGNA at the HPOU building. The meetings will be approximately 45 minutes in length.
The next PAC Meeting will be held on January 19, 2012 and will be discussing the upcoming election races.
Ray Hunt acknowledged retired Assistant Chief Vicki King and thanked her for attending the meeting.
Council Member Andrew Burks inquired on how he could give a contribution to PAC.
APPLICATION FOR MEMBERSHIP
There were no new members this month.
Ray Hunt then announced the door prizes.
ADJOURNMENT
Paul Ogden made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Tom Hayes seconded the motion. The motion passed by a majority of membership.
