The latest rumor to make its way around the department (and causing a great stir by the way) is the “no working an extra job eight hours prior to your shift” rumor. I can tell you that there is no validity to this rumor.
It probably came about from a conversation that Chief Hurtt and the Executive Assistant Chiefs were having. The discussion dealt with officers not being able to work an extra job prior to the start of their shift after coming back form a suspension. (i.e.) An evening shift officer who comes back from a four-day suspension cannot work his/her bank job prior to their regularly assigned shift on the first day back to work. This is also not a new policy but was reiterated and discussed for Chief Hurtt’s benefit.
However, we do advise officers to “take care of their business” while at the extra job as well as making sure all your permits are up to date. Hurtt is of the notion that there are many officers working without permits and he is trying to get their attention. We had been able to get him to compromise on the discipline issue regarding extra jobs, but again lets not be our won worst enemies. Please, if you value your extra job take care of your business.
