On June 7, 2006, seven Marines and one Navy Corpsman were accused of War Crimes. These men have not yet been charged, but are serving time in the brig at Camp Pendleton, California.
As we all know, police officers are often guilty until proven innocent by some in the media arena. This holds true with our fighting men and women as they are abroad bringing a new way of life to a people who have never known anything but hardship and fear. Our fighting men and women today are trained to a level higher than ever before. They are held to a higher level of accountability than ever before; they also have live video attached to their gear such as or own car audio/video. This does not stop the accusations and the removal from duty until the investigation is completed.
There are many Veterans on the Houston Police Department and there have been many Veterans serve on this department that have since retired. I was recently been contacted and asked if there was anything that we, as a Union or a department could do to help these servicemen.
The Union will host a Legal Defense Fundraiser for these servicemen on August 4, 2006, from 11:00am – 2:00pm. Pre-sale tickets will be available through the Union Office or through any Board member. There will be whole briskets for sale at $35.00 each and a plate lunch for $10.00. The plate lunch will include 2 meats, 2, sides and a drink.
All proceeds will be forwarded to the Legal Defense Fund for these servicemen as each of them has sought outside counsel to defend them against the charges.
Please take a few minutes and come by eat lunch with us and visit with a few of the Attorneys that will be representing these young fighting men. If you would like to order a whole brisket, please contact Mike Hamby at 281-924-8859 or call the Union Office and leave your name and number.
Support our Fighting Men and Women on this day!
